Presenting a concise update on the current Covid-19 situation in Philippines
The 2nd of June 2022 Concerned Doctors and Citizens of the Philippines (CDCPH) Weekly Huddle Featured Dr. Peter McCullough! The huddle streams live every Saturday night in Manila from 7- 9 pm (it always runs longer) via zoom and also on Facebook, and Rumble, where replays are available. We were blessed to engage with such giant among doctors and researchers, and also a warm and passionate man!
Following are the slides of the presentation that was made to provide update on the C19 Situation in Philippines, with explanations added. Sources include the weekly FDA “Reports of Adverse Reaction Following Covid-19 Vaccination”, and the Department of Health Tracker and Data Drops.
There are 7 Vaccines currently in use in the Philippines. The most commonly used is Pfizer, followed by CoronaVac/SinoVac. About 63% of all Filipinos have been injected with primary doses. 1st and 2nd Booster uptake has been sluggish at only about 13% and <1%.
Table 2 from the weekly Pharmacovigilance Report sets out Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI). There are no breakdown of deaths by Vaccine type. This information was recently requested under FOI, but no response is received yet. As of 26 June 2022 there are 2,500 reports of deaths which represent 29% of the reported Serious Adverse Events (SAE).
Of the products given, the rates of reported AEFI range from 0.03% for mRNA products, to 0.17% for AstraZeneca. % of AEFI that are serious range from 4.7% for AstraZeneca to 19.6% for Jansen. AEFI are expected to be grossly underreported.
This is the DOH tracker at 2nd July 2022. Deaths date back to February 2020. Current cases are around 1,000 a day in Philippines, and rising.
This figure presents covid-19 attributed deaths by date of registered death. It is peculiar, though no longer unexpected, to note that deaths spiked immediately following start of the official vaccine campaign on 1st of March 2021. There is a second big spike in deaths mid-year concurrent with rollout to the general population. Omicron had a much lower death spike. In January when Omicron was at its peak, case positivity was over 40% for 3 weeks, meaning pretty much everyone would have been exposed, gotten sick (or not), and recovered.
When we look at the age breakdown of covid-19 deaths, there is a very concerning trend into 2022. Even though total numbers of deaths are lower, those deaths have moved away from older age groups (aside from the very old 80+) and into younger age groups that previously were not bearing the burden of many deaths. Injection of 12-17 yo started on 15th October 2021. Injection of 5 - 11 yo started on 7 February 2022.
2022 Vital Statistics are beginning to be released, though are still so incomplete that only January data can be considered for discussion. Note that January 2022 is the first time that January shows excess deaths. There were no excess deaths in 2020 or 2021!
January 2021 does show a further drop in registered live births, worsening the dropping births that have been observed since 2020.
These are the 4-year January births and deaths plotted. Births are plummeting; this is likely now a combination of the rigorous family planning program instigated in 2017, combining with covid-19 measures. Deaths are rising vs. historical. Birth and death data for 2022 may still be further updated with late registrations, worsening deaths and improving births.
Completed Vital statistics for 2021 are still pending release; they only updated as of 28 February 2022, and it takes at least 4 months for substantial completion due to late registrations. Results this year may have been further delayed due to focus on the election.
If the intervention and pandemic measures had been successful, we should not have seen the soaring excess deaths, which cannot be explained by covid-19 infections.
I pray that the new Marcos government, sworn in on 30th June 2022, will see and respond appropriately to these data which represent an unprecedented and in progress demographic change.
