Macau has doubling of typical mortality in 4th Quarter of 2022 and 1st Quarter of 2023! Deaths were 4x and 3.4x Normal in Dec '22 and Jan '23. COINCIDENTAL with Mass December mRNA Boosting.
Macau pharmacovigilance acknowledges only 6 severe vaccine-related reactions to date, with no indication if these included any deaths. Are 1100+ excess deaths in Dec '22 and Jan '23 from Covid?
Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (MSAR) is an island city in the South China Sea. Formerly a Portuguese colony, it has a population of about 680,000 and an area of 32.9 sq km (12.7 sq mi).
Known for gambling, fine food, and historic sites Macau’s economy was largely supported by gambling and tourism. With the pandemic lockdowns and shutdown of tourism, Macau has had a very hard few pandemic years.
At a press conference on 5 January 2023, the Macau Health Bureau director Alvis Lo Iek Long stated that COVID-19 has become an endemic disease in Macau and announced the cancellation of almost all entry curbs and measures. Macau finally reopened to tourists in February 2023!
Vaccine Uptake in Macao and Population Outcomes
The Macau Government vaccination website is very supportive of population vaccination, which was offered to the entire population aged 3 years and older for inactivated products, and 6 months and older for the mRNA products. Dosing recommendations. Note the last column. It is NECESSARY that everyone takes at least 1 dose of mRNA product. Please note that there was a big booster dosing drive, presumably primarily using mRNA products in December of 2022. This fact is very relevant to the following discussion.
Macau residents complied with vaccine uptake recommendations, and Macau Covid-19 vaccine uptake is far higher than the world average.
Weekly vaccine uptake from OWID is presented. Even as most of the world were winding down their response, Macau was ramping up with delivery of booster doses. That last very big dosing spike is December 2022.
Covid-19 vaccination started in Macau on 8th of February 2021. Ramp up of dosing came by June 2021 and then again in November 2021, and early in 2022. A final drive occurred in December 2022. More than 92% of the population have already completed initial protocols.
How is Macau faring in terms of excess mortality? From the international site Mortality Watch, Macau currently shows as the country with the worst population mortality outcomes. In Q4, 2022 their excess mortality stood at 103.1%. In Q1 2023, it stood at 92.1%.
I wanted a further breakdown of deaths, at least by month. The Macau government provides public vital statistics data. I extracted monthly birth and death data from 2018 through to the latest available in 2023. Note that 2023 deaths are listed as preliminary, while the 2023 births are listed as final.
Live births in Macau dropped by 7% in 2020, 10% in 2021, and 14% in 2022. Births are continuing to drop in 2023. That is a reduction in total annual live births from 5,979 in 2019 to 4,344 in 2022 a drop of 27.4%. The first really big drop in registered live births came in April 2022, which is (coincidentally?) 10 months after the first big population vaccination push.
The plotted by month death data is equally spectacular. Deaths were fairly consistent until December 2022 when deaths hit nearly 4x regular rates. Deaths in January 2023 were also 3.4x regular rates. Would that be coincidental with the booster dosing push and mass uptake in December 2022 (doses increased from 56.2/100 to 67.6/100)? The 2023 preliminary data shows that death rates above historical levels are continuing!
It is ALL COINCIDENTAL
The Macau Government provides a token monthly AEFI report. The latest here is dated 1 August 2023. Out of 1.83 million doses, 5,605 minor adverse events were reported. 1,493 were considered coincidental and were dismissed leaving 4,079 reactions acknowledged as related to the vaccines. There were 14 additional reports of SAE, but of these only 6 were considered vaccine-related, the rest are dismissed as coincidental. There is no breakdown to show if any of these 6 resulted in death.
Worldometer shows a total of 123 Covid-19 deaths in Macau, to date, with nearly all occurring in January 2023.
123 Covid-19 attributed deaths cannot explain some 550 excess deaths in December 2022, deaths which occurred before Macau lifted restrictions and opened its boarders. They also cannot explain some 600 excess deaths in January 2023.
Regardless, on-line media state that these were likely due to Covid-19 infections.
Really? Were the excess deaths due to the Covid-19 vaccines which are confirmed to have been administered, and which are known to convey higher risks with each subsequent dose? Were they due to unconfirmed and undetected Covid-19 infections? Or were they due to a combination of both? Sudden widespread infections on top of altered and terminally suppressed immune systems. Was there an interaction between prior doses of inactivated vaccines and subsequent doses of mRNA product? Were there quality and safety differences between batches?
I would hope that this article raises serious questions that need to be answered for the people of Macau! At least deaths in these 2 months should be assessed in detail, to ascertain what proportion had recently taken a booster dose.
Hi. I can only speculate on why they did not apparently have considerable excess deaths in 2021 and 2022, until the December booster.
One other thought is that due to lockdowns a large portion of Macau's OFW (overseas foreign workers) population who work to support the casino industry may have returned to their countries of origin. Having fewer persons in the nation would have naturally translated into a lower death rate. This may have in turn camouflaged any excess deaths in the remaining population.
The same mechanism may have applied, at least in part, to the lower births that were observed in both 2020 and 2021.
Other possibilities:-
- Interaction between prior inactivated doses and new mRNA doses
- More toxic batches of mRNA by December 2023 [the overall population of Macau is quite small, so likely did not receive many different batches - this would be good for someone with access to Macau batch data to look into].
- cumulative damage even from the inactivated reaching a peak with what could have been a 4th or 5th dose for many receipients.
- December / January are winter in Macau. This is also a time of higher vulnerability, which may have worsened vaccine reactions, if they occurred.
So many possible points to speculate upon.
Macau's migrant worker population was lower than normal during Covid-19 pandemic years, and has not yet recovered. Many Macau residents were also leaving for better futures overseas. https://macaonews.org/business/macau-macao-non-resident-workers-population-may-2023/
