Private Sector Should Use DOH Stock To Prevent Waste

While DOH OIC Vergeire has recently been announcing the pending arrival of 1 million doses of donated bivalent Pfizer jabs, today she is also telling private business not to rush out to buy these products (I suspect that they can’t actually buy them with the products having no Certificate of Product Registration and there no longer being a State of Calamity in effect), to avoid “waste”, as the Philippines still has some 26 million doses of unused injectables on hand (and an additional 24 million doses already expired). If injectables were costed at PHP500/dose that is equivalent to PHP25-billion of unused/wasted products. Someone should be answerable!

With current dosing rates (10,663 average daily doses in the last 7 days), it would take nearly 6.7 years to use the current on-hand unexpired stock! Clearly no one wants these products any more!

President in No Hurry to Procure Bivalent Vaccines

The President seems to grasp the lack of demand. He is toning down the Covid-10 response stating that there is no need to rush the procurement of bivalent products given falling cases in the country. Is there some friction building between DOH and the President?

3-Year Low New Cases in Metro Manila and Philippines

It would seem that the President will prefer to focus on other agendas than the Covid-19 vaccines. Indeed, Covid-19 cases have fallen to a 3-year low with only 17 cases (from an estimated population of 12 million) in Metro Manila and 36 cases reported in the entire country on 5th February 2023.

Soaring Non-Covid Infectious Diseases in 2022

Other infectious diseases though are taking increasing tolls, with Philippines reporting increases in most infectious diseases in 2022. EDCS week 52 report link, here. My doctor friends are telling me that they are noticing increases in infectious diseases, and further, that many cases are proving hard to treat. Could this be due to immune suppression?

Masking Makes No Difference, it Never Did, it Never Will!

Cochrane Systemic Review: Masking makes no difference, whether surgical or N95, to the spread of respiratory viruses. It never did! Their other conclusion was that hand washing shows a modest effect in reducing spread of infections.

Vitamin D Supplementation Prevents Serious Illness and Hospitalization

Vitamin D supplementation in Covid-19 was effective in preventing serious illness and hospitalization. While this review looked at supplementation in the case of illness, a wiser approach must be to ensure that Vitamin D levels are adequate to prevent development of severe illness in the first place, optimizing for immune system function. Get some sun, supplement wisely (D3/K2). If in doubt, and testing is available, checking vitamin D levels to guide supplementation could be a good health investment.

Natural Infection Provides Better Protection Than Vaccination

New paper published in Nature finds that natural infection performs better than vaccination in protecting against subsequent infection and equivalent in preventing hospitalization. Vaccinated and recovered had lower protection from reinfection than natural infection, but slightly higher protection against hospitalization. Their findings: -

• Vaccination only was associated with 36% reduction in risk of new infection and a 90% reduction in risk of hospitalization.

• Prior infection only was associated with 65% reduction in risk of infection and a 90% reduction in risk of hospitalization.

• Vaccinated and recovered status was associated with 63% reduction in risk of hospitalization and 98% reduction in risk of hospitalization.

Though the paper concluded that vaccination is an important public health tool for prevention of severe Covid-19, this has not been weighed against the considerable risks of (serious) adverse events from vaccination. Given that natural infection performs as well as vaccination, passing on the short-lived protection from vaccination should be an easy choice. Even easier now that Covid-19 has become mild.

Isn’t it about time that natural infection is recognized equally with vaccination? Time to fully open borders and stop treating unjabbed (but recovered) persons differently from everyone else!
