Philippines has PSA Released Final Formal 2022 Vital Statistics. The 2022 data is compiled effective 31 July 2023. The reference 2021 data is still compiled effective 31 March 2022.
While there is no change in 2022 data counts since prior PSA releases (2022 as of 31 July 2023) breakdowns are provided and are of interest. I will be providing a deeper dive in my next few stacks.
PSA has released the formal 2022 vital statistics, for births, marriages, deaths. The released data total counts are the same as the last release in November 2023, which presented data for 2022, compiled effective 31 July 2023.
Comparing 2022 births with 2021 births, I am convinced that the 2021 births are considerably better than is shown in the official data; 2022 births include 7 months of late registrations into 2023, whereas 2021 only includes 3 months of late registrations into 2022. Typically, there are considerable delays in birth registrations, and I would expect 2021 births to rise at least 30,000, perhaps more, if the data were actually completed for 7 months of late registrations.
These are the 2022 births compared with prior year’s official data.
Key interesting BIRTH DATA, released on 5th January 2024 includes: -
In 2022 there were 1,455,293 registered live births, which is 6.6% higher than the 2021 births of 1,364,739.
6.3% of births occurring in 2022 were only registered in 2023.
52.1% of babies were male and 47.9% were female.
The 2022 crude birth rate was 13 births per 1,000 population.
September had the highest daily average births (4,755/day), followed by October and November, while March had the lowest (3,520/day).
Median age of mothers was 27 years old, while the median age of fathers was 340.
3.9% of babies were born to mothers aged 17 and younger, 6.2% were born to mothers aged 18-19, and 16% were born to mothers aged 35 and older.
58.1% of births were illegitimate (ie. born out of wedlock)
90% of births were registered within 30 days of birth.
Key interesting MARRIAGE DATA, released on 1st December 2023, includes: -
There were 449,039 registered marriages in 2022, with marriages finally returning to pre-pandemic levels. There however does not appear to be any make up of marriages which did not occur in 2020 and 2021, in the range of 260K marriages, if 430,000 annual marriages is used as a reference baseline.
Most marriages occurred in December (12.4%) and fewest in November (5.3%).
Majority of couples married between ages 25 to 29.
The median age of marriage for women was 28 years old and for men was 30 years old.
434,355 marriages were between Filipinos, while 14,704 marriages (3.3%) involved Filipinos and foreign nationals.
Of the marriages involving foreign nationals, 13,733 were between foreign men and Filipina women, 971 were between Filipino men and foreign national women, and 385 marriages were between foreign nationals.
The most common intermarriages were between Filipinos and American nationals (32.5%). Chinese-Filipino comprised 7.5% share. British-Filipino comprised 7% share, Canadian-Filipino marriages comprised 7.6%, and Japanese-Filipino 5.6%.
Most marriages were civil, followed by Catholic.
Key Interesting DEATH DATA, released on 6th February 2024.
There were 679,766 deaths registered in 2022 up to 31 July 2023, which was a 22.7% decrease from the 879,429 deaths officially reported1 for 2021. 2022 overall deaths were lower than 2021 deaths, but higher than all other prior years. 2022 deaths were 10.7% higher than 2020 deaths. This is a considerable continued rising of deaths; there should have been a big drop in deaths in 2022 in correction of the 2021 massive 43.2% excess.
These are 2022 deaths compared to prior year data.
There was an average of 1,862 deaths registered each day in 2022, giving a crude death rate of 6.1 deaths per 1,000 population. The assumed population for this death rate is 112.9 million based on prior predictions. However, if the population is still slightly less than 112 million (my calculation based on PSA reported births and deaths since 2020), the death rate may be slightly higher.
The highest deaths were in January 2022 (this was when there was a big spike in deaths concurrent with the last major booster dosing push / last substantial “covid-19 infection” wave). After the January peak, deaths dropped though to March and then generally trended upwards for the rest of the year.
The death pyramid shows that generally more men (56.5%) than women (43.5%) died. However, there were hugely disproportionate deaths in elderly women in 2022. This pattern of elderly women deaths was not seen in prior population death pyramids (discussion and comparison will be for a later stack).
47.5% of the deaths in 2022 were attended by a health-care provider.
57.9% of deaths occurred at home.
There were 20,072 infant deaths in 2022, with 6/10 infant deaths being male.
There were 44,948 pediatric deaths, with these deaths being of persons aged 0 - 19).
2,008 women died while pregnant or within 42 days of the end of that pregnancy.
8,493 fetal deaths were reported, for loss of any confirmed pregnancy.
The leading causes of death in 2022 remain the same as in prior years, with the top 5 being metabolic in nature. Ischaemic heart disease is the leading cause (18.3%), followed by neoplasms (10.2%), and cerebrovascular disease (10.1%).
Over the next few weeks, I will drill down into birth and death data and provide comparisons in trending from 2019 though to 2022 and my discussions. Stay tuned for updates!
The 2021 data is certainly still incomplete as it was only compiled effective 31 March 2022, with deaths for the end of 2021 substantially incomplete. PSA would appear unwilling to release complete data for 2021, as it may be too disturbing for public consumption. I will write about this in a separate substack.
